It’s probably not something many women consider until they actually get to a place where they consider themselves as old but, just like any other part of your body, your vulva and all its beautiful bits, can age too!
It’s never too early to start thinking of ways to preserve yourself, in a similar way you would look after your health, skin or hair.
Taking the necessary anti aging steps for your vulva will not only make you feel good about yourself on an ego level, but you will genuinely be doing your physical self a lot of good too.
Now, before I go on, let me just establish that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with aging gracefully and doing the whole ‘let nature take its course’ thing but for those that like to stave off the inevitability of age and halt the natural course of things in its steps, this post is for you!
OK for starters, the aging process begins as soon as we reach adulthood. Think of it like a rollercoaster, you are born and you continue to climb to the top of the incline throughout childhood, puberty and adolescence. Once you cross into your 20’s, metaphorically, you’ve hit the highest point of the ride before the aging process kicks in. Now, aging doesn’t mean everything goes to pot overnight, its literally a process that occurs over time which is why its important to cut in and slow things down as soon as you can, if that is what you want to do.
Let’s be real here, losing youthful plumpness in your vulva, can absolutely happen. Throw in a few pregnancies/births and you may experience a loss in elasticity and some sagging, but in reality even without the pregnancies and births, this can be experienced.
Drink water
One of the most important ways of keeping your body in its best form and that includes your vulva, is by staying hydrated. Drinking water is sooooooo essential as it improves energy and circulation and it encourages blood flow to your bits below which keeps everything healthy and in working order.
Keep the drinking and smoking to a minimum!
That kind of goes without say doesn’t it? But the truth is, smoking can lower estrogen levels and alcohol can cause dehydration – both impacting your vulva directly.
Kegels!
You are never too young to start practising Kegels as a pelvic floor exercise.
Whilst yes, those that are set to have vaginal births are encouraged to actively practise Kegels in order to help with delivery and minimise the possibility of a prolapse or weakened muscles, Kegels can be done simply just to help train your vaginal muscles to contract and release effectively – great for keep everything tight including your bladder and of course, for intercourse purposes too. Plus they’re so easy to do, so there’s no excuse to not do them. Heck I’m doing a few as I type away….
More sex
Staying sexually active is a fun and effective way of keeping your vulva youthful. If you do enjoy using lubes and sex toys, do ensure you use vagina friendly ones. It makes a difference in the long run.
Always ensure you practice safe sex and a great hack is; making sure you pee after sex. Having a wee after a session, will clear any harmful bacteria that may have set up home in your urethra and will go some way in preventing you from winding up with a urinary tract infection (UTI).
All of the above are things that you can do without much cost.
Of course, a more extreme way of keeping your vulva looking and behaving in the way you want, would be to undergo surgery. Non surgical treatments have also become a very popular way of rejuvenating the vulva and vagina but you know what, I’ll talk about that next time.
In the meantime, get clenching… Kegels for the win!!!
